Amenities Spring Highlights: April & May: Migrant shorebirds (excellent from last week of April through May); loons in breeding plumage; late waterfowl; nesting Ospreys; horseshoe crabs nesting Summer Highlights June-July: nesting species including Oyster Catcher, Common and Forsters Terns, Herring and Greater Black-backed Gull, heron rookery, Ospreys (a dozen nests), Seaside Sparrows, world's largest Laughing Gull colony, Black Skimmers, first fall migrant shorebirds arrive last week of June...usually Whimbrel. Large migration of all shorebirds soon after. Great time to see Clapper Rails often with chicks. August: migration continues as well as late nesting of marsh species mentioned above. Great shorebirds, clapper rails, fledging Osprey chicks. Fall Highlights August, September, October: migration in full swing including shorebirds, raptors, first waterfowl, we have a great place to see American Bitterns. Salt marshes become a staging area for many coastal species. We run a number of field trips with the Cape May Bird Observatory throughout the year. In spring and fall trips are popular with birders. RESERVATIONS ARE ESSENTIAL In spring and fall reservations are essential. Trips often sell out so please call ahead. |
